***SPOILER ALERT***

The movie is original and unique in a lot of ways that unfold later on that takes it from going mediocre in the middle of the movie, to Good in the end. It opens up grabbing your attention, realizing this guy just doesn’t like porn like the next dude and merely holds consistently to it… but he takes it more seriously than any other facet of life. It’s not just an addiction, but a lifestyle. Despite his fantasy-level accomplishments as a single guy, having sex with bombshells every week that an Average Joe has only had once, maybe twice in his life in college, his seriously-taken experience with porn is still the most satisfying prize in life.

He explains and justifies This in the movie well, but in another very important element, he does not. Which may have been done on purpose to leave it up to the viewer, thinking about it afterward.

It doesn’t fully quench your thirst at the end, but it does bring a surprising wake-up call that may be more hidden to others: Barbara Sugarman, the bombshell that any guy would be lucky to have, has her own problem. In fact, her problem, though not an addiction, causes pain/issues on others directly. Her issue is that she wants a guy to follow her and what she does, not by taste, but by Expectation.

Barbara’s fantasy world is wrapped up in Romcoms, which is just as unrealistic (if not more-so) than an enthralling porn clip… but also followed through in expectations that things Are supposed to be one-sided between guy and girl, where the guy should be lucky to have the woman and conform to what she wants and where things go. Again, not as a taste, but a „Uhh, yeah, duh,“ much like a guy’s position on merely watching porn now and again. But her problem is worse than a person (guy or girl) merely watching porn, although it’s on the same level as someone with Jon’s massive lifestyle addiction to it.

But in the end, Jon grows up, and she doesn’t, in their last 5 minute talk. I think the writing could have been better with the older woman Esther he engages with. The movie didn’t get in-depth with his character bonding with her… it just seemed rushed and an „Oh, by the way, with Esther, yeah, I found myself even though it’s not a Relationship-relationship…“. That’s what leaves the thirst unquenched, but at the same time, you’re still left reasonably satisfied due to it being a thought-provoking movie about controversial things outside the „norm“.

I saw „The Hangover Part 3“, starring Bradley Cooper-Silver Linings Playbook, All About Steve, Zack Galifianakis-The Campaign, Into the Wild, Ken Jeong-Community-t.v., All About Steve and John Goodman-Argo, Community-t.v..

This is supposedly the last of the trilogy. The second movie was basically a copy of the first one and it went downhill in the laughs-it was funny but not as funny. This one deteriorates even more so. Zack has a turn for the worst after a giraffe incident and a death in the family so Bradley and the rest of the Wolf Pack decide to give him an intervention, which includes a trip to a special center in Arizona. John sidetracks them and messes things up for the boys. It seems that he is looking for Ken and he believes that the Wolf Pack can find Ken, since they have a past with him. Their search begins in Tijuana, Mexico and ends up in Las Vegas, where it all started. Not so hilarious hi-jinks ensue-there are some funny parts but the original one is still the best one. There was some good music to be heard; I remember hearing Billy Joel, Santana, Phil Collins-In the Air Tonight- and Black Sabbath-NIB. It’s rated „R“ for violence, language, nudity and drug content and has a running time of 1 hour & 40 minutes. It’s not one that I would buy on DVD but it would be alright as a rental.

I was really excited to watch this movie and was expecting it to be a real comedy. I did read the plot summary and found it interesting and with actors like Tina and Paul – movie has to be a good laugh. But Admission fell short. Although Tina and Paul played a decent role with others doing an okay job, the movie was pretty simple with no real comedy. Probably it was not meant to be a real comedy movie so my bad. On the other hand, the movie did touch upon some sensitive topics of real life i.e. admission to a college, how kids try to push themselves to over achieve to get in top schools, disturbed lives of people and how they try to survive in their separate lives. Overall, I would say it is a one time watch movie. If you decide to watch it, hope you enjoy!

Even with the advance of special effects there will never be a movie as honest and as true to its heart as THE WIZARD OF OZ, with the exception of THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY. But since the latter is too new, it can’t be compared to the former. Everyone at one point of their lives, especially as children, has seen this film and has experienced the emotions that Dorothy experienced, the terror of entering the Wicked Witch’s lair, her transition from little girl to wise young woman, and this incredible world that L. Frank Baum created and Hollywood perfected.

What makes a great movie? The experience that you are watching it for the very first time, whether you were seven years old or an adult living in an adult world. This film is one of those. Even when as an adult I can see some of the cracks peeking through and some lapses in continuity, who cares? The tornado ripping through the cornfields is as real as the real ones I have seen even though is was really muslin. The moment that the sepia-tones from the Kansas segment peel away and Dorothy opens the door of her house and I saw the bright colors of Oz I knew I was there. The story had enveloped me now, as it had did back then. In my world, this is an utterly, fantastic film.

And what is Oz, by the way? Well, from a little girl (and the child in all of us), it’s that place where our imagination runs wild, where everything is perfect, where there is no tomorrow and a yellow brick road will take us to that perfect place filled with song. It’s that place where we feel we will belong, and who as a child didn’t feel like we were out of place? Notice I repeat the word ‚place‘ because this is so much about placement, places, our place and therefore, our own self-expression, our own sense of self. Who hasn’t wanted to „seek a place of one’s own‘ where light and love prevailed only to return back to where we came from, stronger and wiser? Its message is so universal. Truly, there is no place like home.

Timing is crucial for the symbolic success of this movie as well. Still in the middle of the Depression years, when unemployment was at an all time high, it focuses not just on the harshness of keeping a farm, but then throwing a parent-less girl into a strange land who finds a foster mother of sorts who would tell her that the way back home would not be an easy one. Glinda the Good represents this character, the same way, the Wicked Witch of the West represents the darker forces that watch her every move and aggressively try to trip her up. This is quite a lot on the shoulders of a little girl, and having Judy Garland — not yet the major star but just on the brink of becoming one — play Dorothy Gale has become casting history. In 1939 she was about seventeen, fresh-faced, innocent and vulnerable: she is Dorothy, and we can’t imagine anyone else, not even nearly 70 years later.

And speaking of casting, it was genius to have the actors playing Dorothy’s friends and enemies in Kansas also show up in Oz. Since the movie is so much like a dream, it’s more than logical: many people in our lives sometimes show up in dreams — it’s even in books about dreams. That they also represent that which not only they, but Dorothy most of all, lacks — courage, love, and wisdom — makes their appearances even more intrinsic to the story, so when they grow as characters, so do we, and of course, so does Dorothy.

THE WIZARD OF OZ is timeless. So simple, so honest, but so deep in its messages about love and self-discovery. All of the actors including the veteran Billie Burke would be remembered the most for their roles here more than any other movie. The set direction is made to look as close to a storybook; all that is missing are the page frames. There isn’t a false move here, and all those back-stories… well, their okay to read but for the cinema lover looking for magic, it’s all here, in about two hours of pure entertainment.

Honestly, even being a person of color, I didn’t know the story of Oscar Grant really until I saw this movie, and the main reason I saw this movie was because of Melonie Diaz; and because there hasn’t been too many movies featuring people of color, especially black people, not done by Tyler Perry, and I wanted to put my money down to show that it isn’t just Tyler Perry who can solely have people of color dominate his cast and make profit. That aside, I didn’t know what to expect, but in the AMC in Lincoln Square, seemingly I wasn’t the only one.

In the film, we focus on Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan) and his pursuit to turn his life around. After all, he has a daughter and a potential future wife named Sophina (played by Melonie Diaz) to take care of and he seemingly, after a prison sentence or even a few, has decided that he can’t stay the way he was no more. Unfortunately, the path toward being more righteous is hard and though he has the support of his girl and mother Wanda (played by Octavia Spencer), having initiative and optimism isn’t really getting him where he wants to go.

Diving deeper, throughout the film we establish who Oscar is as a person. He is a young African-American male who has been with his high school sweetheart for years, maybe cheated on her once, but for the most part has been faithful. He seemingly is, or was, in the drug game and is trying to be the best man possible to raise his daughter since, seemingly, his dad is no where to be found. To say the least, Oscar is a character on the road to redemption with demons in his past. But, long time girlfriend Sophina is there for him, and in what seems to be rare in black cinema, we see a family extending from his mother, sister, uncles and grandma, all rooting for the boy who they can see is struggling, but at least trying to make something of himself. Unfortunately though, due to advice given with goodwill he is lead down a path with challenges his mortality.

To me, one of the things I liked about this film was because it showed the rarely seen black family, and yeah Oscar’s dad wasn’t present in the movie, but we saw his uncles, his grandmother and mother who all seemed to be the tightest nit family I’ve seen as a representation of Black folks in ages. Not only that, but it feels that it has become so rare to see a Black man not only spend time with his kid, but being actively in their life to the point where you almost can feel envious, if not a sense of pride, by seeing someone like Oscar on screen. But what really made the movie to me was the fact that within 90 minutes I felt so attached to a character who I not only found myself admiring in some ways, but also felt like I got to know him, laugh with him, and even be part of his life like he was sharing his own story.

But, there lies one issue: The movie spoils its ending within the first few minutes and then what we go through is a buildup to what happened in the film. However, with you already knowing what is ultimately going to happen, it sort of makes it hard at times to get too into the movie for you don’t want to get too close because with each moment of seeing Oscar with his family, and especially his daughter, you keep replaying one of the first scenes in the movie to remind yourself that this isn’t likely to last. Also, on a technical issue, this film is very grainy. Considering how companies spend millions to convert movies to 3D, I was surprised how pixelated this movie looked at times, especially during night scenes. Oh, and sometimes the camera is shaky and it can be a little disorienting, but I guess they wanted a almost documentary type style to the film so a steady cam may not have expressed what the director was going for.

Overall: Go See It

But Be Warned Movies like this, as beautiful as they are, seemingly are made for the times and to convey a message. With events like the Trayvon Martin trial going on, this film seems placed at just the right time to remind the world that events like that aren’t rare occurrences, much less just done by regular old civilian hands. Films like these are made to speak for those people and remind the world that they are someone, or were someone. Films like these remind people that even those who sordid past are used to tarnish their name to make the perpetrator seem less evil, they still were someone’s son, boyfriend/ husband, father and that just because they had a past, doesn’t mean they didn’t deserve a future. Expect tears with this film.
